Horizontal Columns in Tableau Exports? Here’s why and how to Fix!
Ever downloaded a Tableau worksheet to Excel, using the built in download button in Tableau Cloud, or Server or by using the download object? then, when doing so, only to find the last column bizarrely appears horizontally in the CSV file? That tiny, annoying glitch can really disrupt your workflow, right?. As frustrating as it is, this is a common issue, and thankfully, it’s easily resolved.
Here, I’ll explain why this happens and with a simple solution to fix it.
The Problem
Exporting a Tableau worksheet as a Crosstab to Excel or CSV sometimes results in the last column spreading across a row instead of vertically in its own column. Below is an example using Superstore data.

How to Resolve the Issue
Remove the Field from “Detail” in the Marks Card
– Go to your worksheet in Tableau.
– Find the field under “Detail” in the Marks Card.
– Right-click on the field and select “Remove” or drag it out of the Marks Card.
– Re-export the view as a Crosstab, this will ensure the last column appears vertically.

Why This Happens
This behaviour results from how Tableau structures data for exporting. Fields in the “Detail” section of the Marks Card are often treated differently to data in rows and columns which Tableau might then present horizontally during export.
